A Favorite Website: Build Your Wild Self & New Products
Hiya! I've got a LOOOOONG post for you today, but it's filled with goodies! First, I've been busy creating again and I've come up with two different things! The details are below. Under that, I'm sharing one of my favorite websites with you all!
My first product I created is an Ultimate Teacher Planner! Well, it can be an anything planner, but it's definitely useable for teachers!
Included in this planner:
-Month by Month UNDATED single page spreads & double page spreads
-To do list template
-Parent communication form
-Daily schedule template
-Class list forms
-Lesson plan template
-Gradebook forms
-Daily 5 Checklist forms
I chose to create this for my own pleasure, but wanted to share it with you all! I left the calendars undated - why??? Well, so you could use this planner year after year without having to change the dates on the form - you just write the dates in yourself! I also chose to create some of the forms with numbers. This is so that way you don't ave to rewire names 9723948 times and can just assign your students a "number." I'm not trying to say that your students are just numbers... this is just for your forms! :)
I chose the coral damask since it's my favorite color, but I do have many other backgrounds that I can make - if you want one on request, let me know! I'll see what I can do :)
My second product I created is a Fraction & Decimal Matching Game.
This game is really very basic, but I wanted to keep it this way. Why? I remember when I was younger... I had a few friends that had trouble learning their fraction and decimal equivalents. My teachers gave them similar types of activities... flash cards, quizzes, etc., to help them practice. I loved doing fractions and decimals, but saw the struggles they faced. So, I chose to create a plain, gray and black game for students to practice learning their fraction/decimal equivalents. I didn't want to fancy it up with a bunch of graphics and so forth, and I wanted a calming background behind the cards. Anyway... this is great for those students that need more practice or for a review before a big test! I hope that you can find some use in your classroom for these :)
Build your wild self? What the heck does that mean? Well, I'll tell ya! This is a website that I absolutely adore (and a website that I wish I would have come up with). I'm not sure how many of you are familiar with this website, so I thought I would share! It's called Build Your Wild Self. This website is sponsored by the New York Zoos & Aquarium and the Wildlife Conservation Society.
First, I'm going to show you how to make your own wild self, and then I'll give you all some ideas (and things that I've done with this website)!
Once you hit the start button, it's pretty self explanatory. You write your name first and then choose your gender. You can also choose your skin tone below where you chose your gender if you would like to change that. Once you choose your gender, you start to choose the rest of yourself.
You choose from your hair, eyes, ears, face, arms, bottoms, and tails. But, I'm warning you now: you may have some students that become upset when using this site. When you sometimes choose a piece of clothing such as shorts, it may get replaced by a bottom that you have chosen. Therefore, you cannot always have the shorts and bottom you want and might have to pick between the two. Make sure your students know this or else you are gonna have a few upset students!
The cool thing when choosing your body parts and clothing is when you put your mouse over a certain object, it tells you what kind of animal that is from. For example, in the picture below, I chose to put spider crab claws on my person. You can see this by where my arrow is over top of the arms in the choice window. I had to point this out to my students, so they started trying to find all the same body parts for the animal, but realized they couldn't. This site tries to make sure you cannot just build a single animal... and I'll show you why!
After you choose everything you want on your person, you click your backgrounds. I chose a background already in the picture above... but chose a random one. This is the fun part - you can challenge your students to choose a background that best fits their character they made. This is where habitat skills come into play! Have fun with it.
The next picture is my finished person. I've also clicked on the red button that says, "I'M DONE." It will bring you to this new screen where you find out a TON of information about your wild self.
At the top on the left hand side, you see my name is "Sara, the Ibex-fen-mon-cra-bat." Try saying that 3 times fast... my kids LOVED telling each other what their new name was. Beyond that though, this screen brings out some amazing science information. Do you see where it says, "What's WiLD about you?" This is my favorite part of the entire website. This is where the true science comes into play.
Each body part that you've chosen is listed in that scroll down menu. For example, I chose Ibex horns. Well, in that little box, it tells me what the Ibex horns do for me. Therefore, this is an ADAPTATION lesson!!! How cool is that? And you thought it was just going to be a silly, fun activity. NOPE. It's SCIENCE!!!!
This is a great project to lead into discussing various adaptations that animals have all over the world. What kind of adaptations do polar bears have to help them survive in the arctic? What about flies, what kind of adaptations help them survive? And so on. I loved this as an introduction, so I was upset when I couldn't use it...
Anyways... once you click on the "PRiNT your WiLD self" button on the bottom left hand side, you will see a big picture of what you created and then each adaptation is spelled out below that. I suggest printing these out and holding onto them for the two ideas I'm going to give you below!
1) With the knowledge of adaptations, you could have your students do a project using adaptations of a specific animal. It could be an animal included in their picture or an animal outside of the picture. This would obviously go with the subjects of Science and Language Arts.
2) Using the picture, have your students write a story from the point of view of their character. For example, since I have fox ears on my character, I could do a story about how I hear everything that happens in the animal world. I could also discuss how I overheard something that I wasn't supposed to, so I did something sneaky (kind of like Anansi in the Moss Covered Rock). This would be a great idea to use when discussing morals of stories or the character of a person. Therefore, this would be a great activity to go along with the subject of Language Arts.
Of course, there are MANY other ways that you could use this simple, fun creation, but these are just a few ideas that I have come up with on my own. I intended to use this idea in my 2nd grade classroom with the idea of #2, but we "ran out of time..." - long story.
SO, I hope that you found this website useful and that it can be a quick and simple, yet educational, project you might use in your classroom - regardless of the ages of your students!
That's all I've got for you. Time to go to dinner for baby sister's birthday - Italian ... MMMMM.
Have a good evening, y'all!

I PASSED!!!!! & Questions
I officially passed my Praxis Elementary Education: Content Knowledge test - which means I'M noW OFFICIALLY ABLE TO BE LICENSED TO TEACH 4TH & 5TH GRADE!!! I am so, so excited and I could not be more thankful for the way everything is turning out in my life. Next step: JOB.
Today's also my baby sister's 20th birthday - Happy Birthday, Samantha! Love you lots!
Now, my questions for you all...
1) What would you like to see me post about? I'm losing sight of what to write about... sad, I know. But it's true! I'm tired of rambling on about myself (and if you know me... that's a big deal), so I need something new. Do you want to see websites I've used in the classroom and how to use them? Ideas for the classroom? Ways to keep the classroom dynamic going? How to get your students engaged in what you're doing? I dunno... what do y'all like?!
2) Have any of you all subbed before you got your own classrooms? What did you like and dislike? How did you prepare for each day? Did you have a bag of tricks that you swore by (or still do swear by)? Did you have something prepared for each grade level? I'm soo scared of going into this because I'm not sure what all to expect, being that it's not my own classroom and I don't know the children all that well!
3) How long did it take for you to be comfortable in the field of teaching? Do you have any thing that you absolutely teach each and every year, because it's just that good? How do you find your resources, and how do you afford them?!
Thanks for those who respond - I truly appreciate your help & your support!! :) I'll be back tomorrow with actual content - I'm just too tired at the moment to write anything content related... interviews/appointments/etc are WEARING me out!!
Have a good day, y'all!

Monday Made It: Tie Blankets & Calling All OHIO Bloggers!
Happy Monday! It's Monday Made It time with Tara @ 4th Grade Frolics! Go join up and show us all what you made :)
For this edition of Monday Made It, I decided to make a tie blanket for my future classroom! I have two tie blankets of my own - one that my old roommate from college, freshman year, made for me and one that my little from sorority made for me! I cuddle with the one from my little more than anything else... it's just too soft! Anyway, I decided I wanted to make one for the reading area in my classroom should a child want to cuddle up OR it can be for those future children of my own! :)
So, how do you make a tie blanket? Well, I didn't take step by step pictures this time because it's just TOO easy. The only downside is that your fingers start to hurt after all the cutting!
STEP 1: You lay down one side of the blanket (a sheet of fabric) on a solid, flat area. Then, you place the other side on top of this, as even as possible.
STEP 2: On each corner, cut out a 4x4 inch of fabric out of BOTH pieces of fabric. Basically, from now on, you're cutting through both pieces of fabric at the same exact time.
STEP 3: Once you've cut out your corners, begin on one side by cutting a strip out of BOTH pieces of fabric at once about an inch wide, and about 3-4 inches in length. I eyeballed it all... didn't want to measure because I was too lazy and I think it wouldn't have made the blanket because it's meant to be uneven!
STEP 4: Tie the two pieces together from the bottom & the top layer of fabric. I chose to double knot mine because it would come undone if I only knotted it once.
STEP 5: Repeat step 3 and 4 until you have all the edges of the blanket tied together.
Ta-da! You're all done and now you have a no-sew blanket that's as comfy as ever!
This blanket is monkey/safari themed - it was one of the packaged, pre-cut ones they had at Jo-Ann Fabrics. It came with a green side, I think to bring out the palm trees. I am INCREDIBLY satisfied with it. The pre-cut ones are about 3 feet wide by 4 feet long.
But, I also have two other tie blankets I'm going to make where I bought the fabric from the choices and had it cut for me (at Jo-Ann Fabrics) - my choice fabric blankets are going to be about 4 feet wide by 6 feet long. One will be for my classroom and one will be for home. The ocean one you see with the ocean animals & words will be for the classroom. I chose to do a yellow solid side to bring out the yellow on a few of the characters! The anchor one below that will be for home. I chose to do a blue background because I wanted to make the anchors stand out. I cannot wait to make either of them! :)
So - that's my Monday Made It!
Don't forget to check out my giveaway page where I update it daily with giveaways - who knows... you could be the next winner. I've won FOUR this week! Holy cannoli!
I hope y'all have a great week and get a lot done!
PS. This is the ONLY day of my SUPER SUMMER SCHEDULE that I've stuck to. Thanks, Tara, for keeping me in line! :)
PSS. Are you an Ohio Blogger??? I've got a few people that have told me they are - now it's your turn to let me know!

How Do You Plan Linky & My FIRST TPT product sold!
Hi y'all! I'm back with a linky party that you will WANT to link up with. Jessica @ Mrs. Stanford's Class has come up with a linky party about how you plan! We all know (secretly at least) that each and every one of us loves to plan and have things in order... :) With this linky party, there's also a giveaway for a $25.00 certificate to Erin Condren! Check out the site here if you're curious as to what Erin Condren is and who this person might be! Click the picture below to join the linky!

So, how do I plan? Well, I'm gonna tell ya!
I don't teach just yet in my own classroom, so my planning is more geared towards, "How do I plan for my life?" I have so many different calendars and post it notes on everything that I do. First up: my calendars.
During the school year, my calendars are PACKED. I don't have a picture of my calendar because there's nothing on it just yet, but I do have a picture of my iPhone calendar. Here it is:
I put everything from the TV shows I watch to the days bills are due to what errands I need to run. As you can see, today I have to write a thank you card and watch Army Wives! Tomorrow I'll be going to an interview and then shopping for 3 hours. Yes, I have to have an event anymore in order to remember to do ANYTHING. I also put all the dates I have tests or volunteer activities, guest blogging posts, and so forth. Once I start subbing, I'll put each and every day that I sub on here. On the 31st of August and the 1st of September, there's a dot there because I'M GOING TO NORTH CAROLINA!! One last hoorah of a vacation before life starts back up again - there also might be some boy there that I'm going to see :)
I also put all of the above dates/appointments/interviews on my calendar on my computer, too! This way, I have two places to remind me of what I'm doing that day or the next day or the next week/month/year. I seriously am OCD about events... I put them on there for the times I intend to do them at and so forth. I actually do stick to the times on the calendar, too!
SO, that's how I plan! I used to use a hand written calendar type planner, but since my iPhone and my Mac are connected to my hip, I don't need anything but those two babies. They're always there and they both can have reminders set - which I do set them!! :) And, if I happen to miss or skip an event for a day, I can easily move it to a later time or to tomorrow without having to scribble and erase and rewrite again.
Make sure to go link up with Jessica! You might find some ideas on how to plan :)

New Packet - Making Words - CRAFTY Series Party Plug!
Hi guys! I've been hard at work to create a great language arts resource for you all! I used to love doing these types of activities when I was younger... but I was also caught constantly completing puzzles. This resource is called Making Words.
There are 80 different word sheets in this packet. In this activity, students are handed a paper. The first thing they must do is color their vowels yellow. This points out that students know the difference between vowels and consonants. Next, students then cut out the letters at the bottom of the page. For students who have difficulty with fine motor skills, this is a good resource as they have to cut out their letters in square shapes. After they have cut out their letters, students will then begin making words out of the letters they have.
For example, if the word is SEPTEMBER, here are some example words that can be made:
-pets
-ember
-steer
-steep
-bets
-step
-tees
-rest
These are just a few examples of the words students can come up with. This not only gives them practice with their spelling, but it also helps with phonemic awareness. Students hear, think about, and identify the phonemes, which is important when learning how to read. This activity can be used during centers, as morning work for when students come in daily, or even as an assessment.
In my TPT store, you will find that there is a preview of this product should you want to check out the kind of work I do. If you enjoy what you see, please feel free to add it to your cart! This is the PERFECT time to stock up on all those products you've been wanting forever because SUNDAY & MONDAY, TPT is holding their Back to School sale!
